EASTWOOD PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY COMPETITION RULES 2017-18

  1. 1.1.  It is expected that contemporary work should be submitted for all competitions including the Exhibition of Digital images & Prints.

  2. 1.2.  An image (or an image so similar as to be indistinguishable from one previously seen) can be used twice across all competitions.

  3. 1.3.  An image can be used once in a single competition. Both rounds of the annual digital and the annual print competitions count as single competitions in this regard.

  4. 1.4.  An image can be used in different years but cannot be entered in the same competition in different years.

  5. 1.5.  Trade or home processed prints are acceptable to all Society competitions.

  6. 1.6.  Any competition must have more than five entrants to be valid. If there are only five or less entries, they will be withdrawn from the competition by the Competition Secretary, but can be re-entered in a subsequent eligible competition.

  7. 1.7.  Any member (except for new members, who are exempt) wishing to enter the Exhibition of Digital Images & Prints must have entered at least one of the earlier rounds of the print and digital competitions.

  8. 1.8.  These rules shall be updated at least annually as required by the committee and form part of the conditions of membership of the club.

2. DEFINITIONS

  1. 2.1.  A monochrome work fitting from the very dark grey (black) to the very clear grey (white) is a monochrome work with the various shades of grey. A monochrome work toned entirely in a single colour will remain a monochrome work able to stand in the monochrome category.

  2. 2.2.  A monochrome image modified by a partial toning or by the addition of one colour becomes a colour work (polychrome) to stand in the colour category. This and other images fall into the colour category.

  3. 2.3.  A digital image is defined as input processed digitally whether by way of a digital camera or by scanning of film or film derived print. Textures Layers, Backdrops Layers and Textured Brushes must be entirely the work of the photographer. All elements comprising a final image must be entirely the work of the photographer.

  1. PRINT COMPETITIONS

    1. 3.1.  Black & White, Monochrome and Colour prints are eligible.

    2. 3.2.  Prints should be suitably mounted for Judges to handle and display.

    3. 3.3.  The colour, shape and size of the mount is at the member’s discretion subject only to a maximum size limitation of 500mm X 400mm.

    4. 3.4.  On the reverse side of the mounting board, the correct way up, each print shall be identified in the following manner:- “DIV1” for Division One members or “DIV2” for Division Two members; Membership Number; Print number (01 to 03). Note that prints should be numbered in order of preference (from 01 up to 03); print title. So for example: DIV1_1627_001/3_Flight of the Bumble Bee.

    5. In this example the Prefix “DIV1” denotes a Division One worker whose membership number is 1627 and the print number is 001 of 3. Please note the underscore this must be in place as it helps order the image in preparation for the judges

    6. 3.5.  For all print competitions, a digital version of the prints corresponding to the normal digital competition dimensions must be submitted by the member to the print competition secretary in advance of the competition, labelled with the same information as the print.

  2. DIGITAL COMPETITIONS

    1. 4.1.  Images for this competition shall be produced as defined in paragraph 2.3 and viewed by digital projection and/or computer monitor.

    2. 4.2.  Black & White, Monochrome and Colour images are eligible.

    3. 4.3.  Where used, borders will be taken as part of the image. Text e.g. title must not be entered in the border area.

    4. 4.4.  An entry must have originated as a photograph taken by the entrant, who must also have made any subsequent digital manipulation.

    5. 4.5.  All images must be submitted as a digital file by one of the following methods; DVD, CD, Memory Stick or emailed to club Competition Secretary.

    6. 4.6.  Each image shall be identified in the following manner: “DIV1” for Division One members or “DIV2” for Division Two members; Membership Number; image number (01 to 03). 4.7. All images shall be in sRGB colour space and JPEG format with all layers flattened or merged with a maximum horizontal dimension of 1600 pixels and a maximum vertical dimension of 1200 pixels.

5. COMPETITION STRUCTURE

  1. 5.1.  All current members will compete in a league structure, with two images from each competition counting towards the league rankings.

  2. 5.2.  Division One will consist of 18 members. The two members who finish with the lowest scores will be relegated to Division Two, with the two top scoring members from Division Two being promoted to Division One.

  3. 5.3.  All members will drop their two poorest scores in the league each season.

  4. 5.4.  A new member to the Society will join Division Two for competition purposes by default.

  5. 5.5.  However, members wishing to proceed to Division One may submit a portfolio of their work to the committee, for their consideration. This portfolio should consist of ten slides, ten prints or ten digital images, eight of which must be of advanced standard. The work should meet the usual competition rules.

  6. 5.6.  Notwithstanding paragraph 5.5, at the end of the season, the number of members being relegated from Division One, along with the two promoted from Division Two, will ensure that 18 members are in Division One from the start of the following season.

  7. 5.7.  These rules will be updated annually, or more frequently as required by the committee. If rules are updated during the season, the membership will be informed of this and the new version of the rules will be updated on the website.
